Vikings and Waterfalls
VIKINGS AND WATERFALLS
This tour is seasonal due to road closures or impassable conditions during the winter. Even in summer, some sites require special vehicles for access, and we have just the kind of jeep you need. Our specially modified 4×4 LandCruiser allows us to navigate these backroads, keeping us away from the crowds and giving you a true sense of adventure.
A unique feature of this tour is its focus not only on nature but also on Viking history.
Hjálparfoss
Our first stop of the day is Hjálparfoss, a beautiful double waterfall.
Stöng
After driving along a dirt road through lunar-like landscapes, we will take a short walk to Stöng. This site features archaeological findings of a Viking-era longhouse, likely abandoned after a 12th-century eruption of Hekla.
Gjáin
Amidst black lava fields and dark mountains lies Gjáin, an oasis with rivers and waterfalls flowing through a lush valley.
Háifoss and Granni
Háifoss, meaning “tall waterfall,” plunges 122 meters, making it one of Iceland’s tallest waterfalls. Its neighbor, Granni, is equally magnificent.
Þjóðveldisbærinn
This exhibition/museum is a replica of the Viking-era longhouse found at Stöng. It offers a deeper understanding of life in Viking-era Iceland.
Ingólfsskáli – Viking Restaurant
To conclude our day, we will dine at Ingólfsskáli, a Viking-themed restaurant offering fine and delicious cuisine made from locally sourced ingredients.
