Hiking in Þórsmörk Highlands
Hiking in Þórsmörk Highlands
As we approach Þórsmörk and enter the mountain roads, our first stop will be the Nauthúsagil ravine. Prepare to get your feet wet, but rest assured, it’s worth it!
Next, we will head towards the ash-covered Gígjökull glacier, a stunning outlet of Eyjafjallajökull.
Before entering the valley of Þór, we’ll visit the enchanting Stakkholtsgjá canyon. This canyon features a gravel walking path that will ignite your imagination, evoking thoughts of elves and trolls inhabiting the area.
Upon arriving at the hiking area, you’ll find multiple trail options tailored to your preferences and fitness level. Some paths are flat and easy, while others are more challenging, requiring ascents and descents. We highly recommend the Valahnúkur hike. It is relatively short but steep, offering breathtaking 360° views across Þórsmörk. Your guide will be attentive to your preferences and adjust the hikes accordingly.
Nauthúsagil (Bull Shed Ravine)
Nauthúsagil, or Bull Shed Ravine, is named after an original bull shed from the nearby farm Stóru-Mörk. This picturesque ravine is renowned for its rowan trees (Sorbus aucuparia) lining the edges and its multiple waterfalls. To reach the last and most impressive waterfall, you’ll need to wade through a small river, ensuring an adventurous experience!
Gígjökull
Gígjökull is a significant outlet glacier of the famous Eyjafjallajökull, beneath which a volcanic eruption in 2010 disrupted air traffic across Europe for weeks. The volcanic ash covering this glacier gives it a unique appearance among Iceland’s glaciers.
Stakkholtsgjá
Stakkholtsgjá is a stunning canyon encircled by 100-meter-high palagonite cliffs and lush vegetation.
